I have automatic updating selected. I did not download it intentionally; did I get it when I installed Microsoft Office 2010? I cannot find any way of checking for updates, update history, etc. I am only a casual photographer camera phone , but often get pix from others. Any comments that would shed light on any of the above, or related matters, would be GREATLY APPRECIATED! If there are any updates relevant to your version of WLPG 2011 I would expect them to be installed from Microsoft Update. The following Wiki shows the various versions and what they include. Changing your file association for photos to the newer version would probably be the best bet. Windows Vista - Change which programs Windows uses by default When you receive a photo in email that you cannot open... Volunteer J - MS-MVP...... This Is Not Tech Support.... Microsoft's Windows Live Services then started including a later version of Photo Gallery, and rebranded it as Windows Live Photo Gallery. This Wikipedia article shows you the full tortured history: It appears that you have both the bundled with Vista Photo Gallery and Windows Live Photo Gallery 2011 installed. My advice would be to : Windows Photo Gallery 2012 and try to install that. Although it appears as though it requires Windows 7 or later, it may install on Vista. If you are able to install the 2012 version on Vista, you will update to the latest version, and set it as the default application for your photos. Otherwise, you will need to manually set the 2011 version as your default application for photos and try and avoid using Windows Live Writer! Helene, Thank you, and thanks to the others who replied to my post. The information you all gave is most interesting. Whether that did any good remains to be seen, but so far I have been able to open all pix that I have received in the last few days; some were already open without taking additional steps. I am not going to attempt to download an additional, still newer version of Photo Gallery until I see if I have more problems. It also could be that some of the things that did not open in the past were in file formats that no version of this program could open; I have no way of checking into that. Hi David, Thank you for providing us those information. Since you are having some confusions regarding getting screen shots, we won't be requesting it for now. To troubleshoot the issue, please ensure that your computer is up to date. To check for the latest Windows updates, please click on the link below: If in case opening Windows Live Photo Gallery doesn't result in any error, we recommend you to use it as the default program as that version is newer than the default Photo Gallery installed on your Windows Vista computer. Please let us know if you need further assistance regarding your issue. Hello Glenda, Thank you for your suggestions. OK, I do have Windows Live Photo Gallery designated as the default for opening all photos I receive. Of course, we are talking about the version of WLPG that I actually have, which I am sure is not the latest version. Previously, my old Photo Gallery was the default for many, but not all, types of photo files. I had not set this up; this just happened to be how it already was, for whatever reason. I do know how to work with updates and update history, and frequently do so. I do not see in update history that I have ever received any updates for either PG or WLPG, although my old PG itself does indicate that I do have all its updates. My WLPG does not seem to have a way of checking for updates on it specifically, and none appear in my general update history either. So I guess I will just go with having my version of WLPG as the default, as mentioned, and see I have further problems. If I do, I will consider installing the newest version, as suggested by GeoffC1. But he says that might not work with Vista. I will go with my new default setup for awhile and take further actions as needed. Usually, people who send me photos I can't open have been able to send re-send them in a way that works for me; so we are not talking about a major problem here. By the way, I was getting the hang of using the snipping tool and getting screen shots to send to Helene, but I was not sure exactly what she was looking for in the first place! Hi David, Thanks for posting back. I understand that you do not want to change your Windows Live Photo Gallery unless you encounter more issues on the version installed in your device. Just like what VolunteerJ has posted, the latest version you can install in your computer running Windows Vista is the 2011 version. What you can do is just to make sure you have the latest build version of it. The latest one is 15. You can check yours by following these: 1. Press ALT + F simultaneously in Windows Live Photo Gallery. Click About Photo Gallery. In case you do not have the same build version, you can try updating to the latest one by downloading the offline installer of Windows Live Essentials 2011. Should you have other concerns, feel free to post back. Regards, Richard Hello Richard, Thanks for your post! OK, I checked the build version of my Windows Live Photo Gallery and it is the one you indicated in your post. I made these designations only a few days ago, so none of my prior problems opening photos happened with my new defaults. Now this: I don't know if this has anything to do with the foregoing, but today I took a snip of something that came in an email a flight itinerary and emailed the snip to two people. THE ONE I'VE HEARD BACK FROM SO FAR COULD NOT OPEN IT! MYSELF ON THE EMAIL WITH THE SNIP JUST AS A TEST, AND I COULD NOT OPEN IT EITHER! BUT THE REAL KICKER IS THIS: WHEN I THEN TRIED TO SAVE THE SNIP JUST FOR GRINS, IT WENT TO THE PHOTO GALLERY THAT HAS NO DEFAULTS CHECKED, NOT THE ONE WITH ALL OF THEM CHECKED. I HAVE NO CLUE WHAT IS BEHIND THIS OCCURRENCE, BUT I WOULD HAVE THOUGHT NOTHING COULD DEFAULT TO MY OLDER PHOTO GALLERY WITH THE WAY I HAVE IT AND THE NEWER ONE SET UP! Or perhaps using that tool requires me to have a different version of something other than what I do have. REGARDLESS, WE HAVE TO WAIT AND SEE WHAT PROBLEMS OPENING PHOTOS I HAVE IN THE FUTURE. I PROBABLY WILL HAVE PROBLEMS IF, LIKE THE SNIP TODAY, THEY GO TO MY OLD PHOTO GALLERY INSTEAD OF MY NEWER WLPG WHICH NOW SUPPOSEDLY IS THE DEFAULT! Meanwhile, I am not sure what Windows Live Essentials is. I do remember getting invitations to download it when it first came out, but I don't think I did. I will look into it if I have continued problems. Thanks again, David Hello David, We appreciate your patience. To address your issues, I will enumerate them for better understanding. I made these designations only a few days ago, so none of my prior problems opening photos happened with my new defaults. Sorry to hear that the new defaults are not working with your photos. Let's try another way. Use Associate a file type or protocol with a program option to fine-tune default programs based on the file type or protocol. For example, you can have all. Meanwhile, I am not sure what Windows Live Essentials is. I do remember getting invitations to download it when it first came out, but I don't think I did. I will look into it if I have continued problems. It includes Windows Photo Gallery, Windows Movie Maker, and other programs like Windows Live Mail, Family Safety and SkyDrive. You can download and install them for free. To know more, refer to this link: I've also noticed from your last post that you are curious about Snipping tool.
